Terms of Reference

Purpose: Support to network members, agencies and staff in Edmonton:
Literacy awareness and education
- Literacy awareness and education
- Promoting and creating Literacy Friendly Environments
- Effecting policy in regards to Literacy within agencies
- Providing literacy related professional development opportunities
- Fostering a community of practice through online blogging, meetings,
and workshops.
Membership: Any organization/professional in Edmonton are welcome to be members of the network

Deliverables:
o Mentoring and support to network members in the following areas:
- Creating Literacy Friendly environments
- How to do a literacy walkabout (templates and forms)
- Clear Language Policy template
o Two workshops a year for professionals/organizations in Edmonton
- Foundational Workshop – Creating Literacy Friendly Environments
- One workshop to be determined by committee members to support members learning (Workshops will be cost recovery)
- Presentations at City and/or Provincial Conferences as determined by network members
o Distribution of “Becoming Literacy Friendly” decal
o Host of the Northeast Edmonton Literacy Network Blog
o Participation in International Literacy Day as determined by committee
o Other activities as agreed by members of the Network.
Scope/Jurisdiction: The Northeast Literacy Network began with agencies in Northeast Edmonton. In June 2010, the network opened membership to all interested agencies. At this time, the network will continue meeting in Northeast Edmonton and will conduct literacy walkabouts within Northeast Edmonton. Through the Network meetings, Network members will mentor and support all agencies in the goals of the Network.
Resource/Budget:
- Network members time for meetings, workshop planning and workshop facilitation.
- Cost recovery budget for workshops ( $10.00 charge for each workshop). Workshops free to Network members.
Decision making: Consensus
Reporting: Each Network member will report to their own Supervisor/ Director as determined by each individual agency.
Meetings: Bimonthly on a Thursday. Location and dates determined by Committee members.

Communication Regular monthly meetings, distribution of minutes, correspondence via email/ telephone, and exchange through blog (http://literacyfriendly.wordpress.com/).
